Understand Various Charging Methods of Electric Vehicles

As an important enegry support system for electric vehicles, the EV charging system provides necessary energy supply for the operation of electric vehicles. It is also an important step in the process of EV commercialization and industrialization.

Based on the standard of whether the charging device is on board or not, the EV charging devices can be roughly classified into portable charger for EV and non-on-board portable EV charger. According to different charging modes, there also exist slow charging, fast charging, power changing, wireless charging, and mobile charging; and different types of electric vehicle charging cables are needed for different charging modes.

Slow Charging of EV Charging System

Slow Charging refers to conventional charging or on-board charging. It mainly uses the portable charging equipment installed on the cars to complete the charging process, and both the household power supply and special charging pile power supply can be used for this charging process. Slowing charging is one of the most common charging method we employ at present. To realize slow charging, both on-board chargers and household wall-mounted charging piles can be used.

Fast charging of EV Charging System

Fast charging is also called as ground charging. As its name implies, it refers to the charging mode where the vehicle is fully charged in a short time. During the fast charging process, the battery will be directly charged by a large current through a non-on-board charger. As the fast charging can charge the battery to about 80% of the power instantly, fast charging is also called emergency charging.

Quick Change of EV Charging System

Quick change is also known as mechanical charge. In addition to the conventional direct charging method, the battery can be charged by changing the whole power battery. That is, when the power battery runs out, just replace the undercharged battery pack with a fully charged one.

Wireless Charging of EV Charging System

In the wireless charging mode, energy is transferred by electromagnetic induction, electric field coupling, magnetic resonance and radio waves without passing through cables. In the wireless charging mode, the on-board induction charger should be installed on the car first.

Mobile Charging of EV Charging System

The ideal situation for electric car batteries is to charge the car while cruising on the road, which is a process known as mobile charging (MAC).

In the future, intelligent mode is not only a requirement for new energy vehicles, but also a requirement for charging stations, charging piles and even electric vehicle charging cables. Of course, in order to ensure the charging safety of the car itself, when the car is charged, it is necessary for the electric vehicle charging cable to implement real-time monitoring of the whole charging process, so as to protect the maximum interests and safety of consumers.

In terms of the future development standards and requirements of electric vehicle charging cables, the performance and safety of the electric vehicle charging cables shall depend on the selection of materials. In addition, designers must also consider many other aspects. The addition of relevant flame retardant materials is also very vital, so as to protect the new energy vehicles from the phenomenon of spontaneous combustion and fire when charging.
