Safety Requirements for Portable Electric Vehicle Chargers

Safety Requirements for Portable Electric Vehicle Chargers

Provided that the power distribution environment is safe, car owners also need a safe and reliable portable electric vehicle charger to bring along. The onboard charger needs to ensure its own safety and charging safety, usually equipped with functions such as plug temperature control protection, current switching, leakage protection, and overcurrent protection.

Plug temperature control protection of portable electric vehicle chargers

Most of the onboard portable electric vehicle chargers on the market claim to have temperature control protection, which includes control box temperature control protection and plug temperature control protection. Most chargers have control box temperature control protection, but only a few onboard chargers have plug temperature control protection.

Firstly, let us explain why only a few onboard chargers have plug temperature control protection. The most direct reason is cost. Adding control box temperature control protection costs at most fifty cents in materials, while adding a plug temperature control protection may increase material costs. Some merchants deceive customers with temperature control protection, and some car owners who do not understand the tricks and want to save money end up buying portable electric vehicle chargers without plug temperature control protection.

Secondly, let's talk about the importance of plug temperature control protection. The quality of plugs on the market varies. The plug sockets themselves may age or rust, and the contact resistance of plug sockets may increase due to insufficient insertion during charging. When using 16A high current charging, the plug socket may be burnt out. Burning out the plug socket is a small matter but the potential fire hazard is frightening. With portable chargers equipped with plug temperature control protection, the charging current will be reduced or the power supply will be directly cut off when the temperature of the plug exceeds a certain level, until the temperature returns to normal and the charging is restarted, which can prevent plug burnout and fire hazards.

Current switching of portable electric vehicle chargers

Portable chargers with current switching function are suitable for more flexible usage environments. If there is an air conditioning socket available, 16A charging can be selected. If there is only a common three-hole socket, 8A or 10A charging can be selected.

Leakage protection of portable electric vehicle chargers

Leakage and grounding are closely related. By using onboard portable electric vehicle chargers with leakage protection, if the vehicle body has leakage, the leakage current flows out through the ground wire. If the portable electric vehicle charger has leakage protection function, it can detect the leakage current and immediately cut off the switch to protect the charging system. In addition to the above functions, portable electric vehicle chargers also need to have overcurrent protection, over/under-voltage protection, over/under-frequency protection, and full charge auto-stop function to fully protect the safety of vehicle charging.
